50 workers crammed into six-seater van

Chinese police uncover a commute that would put the Beijing subway squeeze to shame

Police who stopped a van travelling unusually slowly in China’s southern Guiyang city, were shocked to see their routine traffic stop uncover a car at almost ten-times passenger capacity.

An extraordinary police video captures the moment when the doors were opened and the workers were helped out of the van as the incredulous officer struggles to keep count.

According to the officer’s report, the weight of the cargo was forcing the vehicle's suspension almost to the ground. The passengers were all workers at a local construction site and had been pressured into accepting the dangerously overweight lift by their boss.

The driver was fined and alternative transport was arranged for the commuters.

Conditions facing migrant workers has been the subject of much discussion in China as the government continues to improve the nation’s Hukou system.
