Synthetics outperform conventional oils, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
New research has revealed that synthetic oil provides, on average, 50% better engine protection after a factory-recommended oil change schedule. The Association is urging drivers to consider switching at their next oil change service.

John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair said, “With its superior resistance to deterioration... synthetic oil is particularly beneficial to newer vehicles with turbo-charged engines and for vehicles that frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, tow heavy loads or operate in extreme hot or cold conditions.”
The report focused on eight industry-standard ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) tests to evaluate the quality of both synthetic and conventional engine oils in terms of shear stability, deposit formation, volatility, cold-temperature pumpability, oxidation resistance and oxidation-induced rheological changes.
American drivers tend to be wary about auto shop repairs in general. More than three quarters (76%) don't trust repair shops because they have recommended unnecessary services. The AAA is keen to see drivers find reputable repair facilities to minimise the stress associated with vehicle repair and maintenance.
With the average cost of a synthetic oil change at around $32 more than a conventional oil change and only a limited number of vehicles specifically requiring synthetic oils, the AAA may have an uphill struggle in convincing drivers to make the change. Interestingly, the Association’s survey shows that 83% of service professionals select synthetic oil for their personal vehicles.
