A man from Hunan proposes by using 11 BMWs, leading some to question China's relationship between love, wealth and cars.

An entrepreneur from China successfully proposed to a woman in south-central Hunan Province using a fleet of expensive BMWs. The suitor set up a red carpet flanked with two parallel rows of five BMWs, with the final car placed at the end of the strip for good luck. As the bride-to-be came down from her apartment she was greeted by her future husband, German luxury cars blasting music and flashing their headlights, firecrackers and a bunch of roses.

Unsurprisingly, the extravagant spectacle drew quite a crowd. One passerby said “being proposed to by a handsome and tall man with BMWs makes me envious”, while another, apparently unimpressed by the suitor’s flashy antics, remarked the couple should make sure to clean up the mess they had made.

The relationship between love and wealth has been a hot topic in China of late, in particular with the post-80’s and post-90’s generations. This was highlighted by controversial dating show contestant Ma Nuo, who, when discussing her selection criteria for potential suitors, claimed she would “much rather cry in a BMW than laugh on a bicycle”. While many were appalled by her materialistic outlook, the shocking statement has, nonetheless, made her a popular TV figure, launched her modelling career and even securing her a spot as a commentator for the FIFA world cup.

For gentlemen who are still finding the equation between love and money a tricky one to balance, a blogger in China has come up with a formula to calculate the exact worth of one’s spouse or girlfriend. The post, which has now become viral, invites husbands and boyfriend to compare height, weight, obedience, fashion sense, singing ability, purity and cuteness to ascertain their partner’s monetary value in RMB.
