Ethanol plant gets go-ahead

Celanese has been given the go-ahead to enhance its ethanol plant in Nanjing.

Celanese Corp has announced that it has received all necessary government approvals to enhance and modify its acetyl facility in Nanjing to make it capable of producing ethanol for industrial uses. The company believe the new enhancements will improve the overall profitability of the plant by increasing its product range, while the total investment will only be a fraction of the capital required for a greenfield facility.

The global technology and speciality materials company expects the project, which incorporates Celanese TCX ethanol processing technology, to be online by mid-2013. On completion, Celanese expect new facility will have around 30-40% additional ethanol production capacity than the 200,000 tons announced previously, enabling the company to meet the growing Chinese demand.

Texas-based Celanese produces chemical products for use in most major industries as well as consumer products and last year generated $6.8 billion in net sales.
