Heavy duty fun in a sandbox

Who would have known that digging dirt could be so much fun?

Extreme Sandbox seems to be the ultimate birthday present of choice for people looking for thrills using heavy construction equipment.

The ultimate 'boys' toy' - with plenty of girls also wanting to play - involves an up-close and personal experience with an excavator, skid loader or bulldozer.

The ultimate sandbox allows the chance to dig huge holes with massive machinery...and then fill them up again. There is even an obstacle course to follow.

The company providing this unusual service is based in Hastings Minnesota in the US and there are currently only two sandboxes across the nation.

Customers can use a Caterpillar 315 excavator, D4 bulldozer and 247 skid steer for the sum of $250 for two hours for time with a single machine, or an extra $75 to run a second machine.  There's not even an age limit - at least not at the upper end - with a recent guest choosing to celebrate his 90th Birthday by going back to his childhood with diggers in a sandbox.

However, to avoid over-enthusiasm, would-be construction jockeys are only handed the keys to their machines after watching a 15-minute training video, hearing a safety lecture from Extreme Sandbox owner Randy Stenger and signing a liability agreement in the unlikely event that something goes awry or, of course, you strike oil.
