Mercedes to sell cars on Weibo

German carmaker, Mercedes, is set to sell limited edition smart cars on China's Twitter-style micro-blogging service.

Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd has announced it will sell 666 vehicles, each costing 128,888 yuan ($20,700 on China’s popular social media platform, Sina Weibo. The sale will be the company’s third innovative e-commerce campaign in China.

The limited edition smart cars have been decorated by Mercedes-Benz and luxury jewellery designer Wan Baobao. The cars are adorned with a snake-shaped logo tag in celebration of the coming Chinese Year of the Snake.

In 2010 the company sold 205 smart cars in less than four hours using social media platform, Taobao.com, an eBay-style site owned by Alibaba Group Corp. In February 2012, the carmaker launched a similar sale on Jingdong Mall, selling 300 pearl grey smart cars online in just 89 minutes.
