The perfect Porsche lap app

Porsche launches its Track Precision app.

Available exclusively to Cayman GT4, 911 GT3, and 911 GT3 RS owners, this addition to the Sport Chrono performance package give drivers ways to analyse their lap times if taking their car on track days.

The app receives data from an onobard control unit via WiFi, updating 10-times per second.  It combines vehicle data with video and lap times generated by an attached smartphone camera and GPS.

As soon as the car passes the start line, the recording begins. The app monitors steering angle, pedal positions, speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, as well as sector and full-lap times. It also shows any deviation from an ideal reference lap using a virtual "ghost car."

The data can then be downloaded using free Apple or Android apps.

Meanwhile Google is being conservative in its development of in-car computer interfaces for vehicles. Since entering the market, it has only made 35 apps available. “Responsible design is a shared obligation,” says Greg Neiswander of Google. "The vehicle is an area unlike any sort of other that we operate in, and we need to be actually cautious.”
