In Formula 1, a game of brinkmanship was played out in May between the teams and the sport's governing body the FIA.

At the beginning of 2009 FIA President, Max Mosley, notified the teams of a spending cap on core racing budget.  This was later set at €45m (£39.6m) from 2010 until the end of 2011.  The rebellion was led by Ferrari, who unsuccessfully tried to stop the proposal in the French courts.

After a summit meeting of the team owners during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend followed by meetings with Mosley, and F1 rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone, normal service appeared to have been resumed, although it appears to remain something of an uneasy truce.

Also in Formula 1, Mobil confirmed it was supplier for the Force India team, to add to it's support for Brawn GP and McLaren - all of whom are running Mercedes engines.
