Supercar manufacturer Bugatti has set a new world landspeed record for a production car with its Veyron Super Sport.

The 1,200hp (882kW) supercar, not available for sale until later this year, set the new record at Volkswagen's proving grounds near Wolfsburg in Germany.  Over two timed runs within one hour, the Veyron set a searing 268mph (431.072kph) average, smashing the 265.1mph record previously set by an SSC Ultimate Aero in 2007.

The carbon-fibre bodied 16.4 Super Sport has an all-wheel-drive traction system and a massive 16-cylinder, four-turbocharger engine. The latest model is the third in the line of Bugatti Veyron supercars, following the standard Veyron and the soft-top Grand Sport.

Although the starting price for the exclusive cars is well in excess of £1.2m ($1.7m), the company have already sold 260 standard models and 35 Grand Sport versions.  Five Super Sports have already been ordered before production has even begun.
