Nissan Leaf Euro Car of the Year
The Nissan Leaf split the European judging panel but triumphed to become the first ever all-electric car to win the prestigious Car Of The Year 2011 title.

Based on marks from some of Europe's top automotive journalists, Car Of The Year (COTY) is one of the world's most presitigious car prizes. The Leaf became the first all-electric vehicle to win the title against a mixed range of contestants. Alfa Romeo's Guiletta finished second and Opel/Vauxhall Meriva was third.
However, the judges were divided over the Leaf's capabilities - particularly with existing battery technology allowing a limited travel range. Three of the 25 judges give the Leaf the maximum ten points, but nine judges (all from Italy, Spain and Portugal) gave zero points for the Nissan.
Although the Leaf is the first fully-electric car to win the coveted Award, Toyotas hybrid Prius took the title in 2005. Other past winners include the VW Polo (2010), Renault Megane (2003) and Fiat Punto (1995).
