Mazda's MX-5 sportscar continues to break world production records as its passed the 900,000 unit mark at the beginning of February.

The latest record figure comes nearly 22 years after construction of the first mass-produced MX-5 began in April 1989 having been announced to the public two months previously.

The MX-5 is the longest lasting vehicle in the Mazda stable, having gone through two complete re-designs as well as numerous updates and upgrades. The model's current programme manager, Nobuhiro Yamamoto, vowed to "keep the MX-5's spirit alive while evolving it into a car that will be loved by even more people."

The model first broke the world production record in May 2000, after car 531,890 rolled off the production line.  The Guiness Book of Records, world authority on records of all kinds, has now updated the record three times for the MX-5 since that time.

The MX-5 has led to the creation of fan and owners' clubs around the world and Mazda is now aiming for the 1m vehicle milestone.
