China celebrates 90th Anniversary of Communist Party
The 90th Annual General meeting of the Chinese Communist Party heralded anniversary celebrations across the country.

The actual anniversary date was 1st July and the meeting included a landmark speech from China's leader and the party's General Secretary, Hu Jintao. In a build-up to the main speech, Central Committee Secretary, Xi Jinping, stated that for 90 years the Chinese Communist Party had "united and led people of all nationalities, fought bravely and acheived a great victory for the new democratic revolution."
He continued that "China is building a moderately prosperous society in a critical period while deepening reforms and opening up, accelerating the transformation of economic development in a crucial period."
Hu Jintao spoke about the history of the party and highlighted three main events: the end of the feudal society, the establishment of a socialist society and drawing on international experience to drive change in China. He stated that these events had "fundamentally changed the Chinese people and the nation's future and destiny."
Elsewhere, the country celebrated in a variety of ways. a massive celebratory display was erected in Beijing's Tiananmen Square; in Shanghai, five acres of "ecological rice" were planted in a pattern that celebrated the anniversary and in Chongqing a "Red Memory Map" was created which showcased revolutionary site around the city.
