VW in record ketchup sales

It's still April, but the launch of a Volkswagen limited edition Classic Ketchup is no April Fool.

VW Spiced ketchupThe 1,000-bottle limited edition ketchup sells at €3 ($4) each and was launched at the Techno Classica Essen - Germany's largest classic car show.

While most people recognise VW as a car manufacturer, the German automaker has also been developing a profitable sideline in the food industry.  After creating the 'classic' VW curry sausage in the early 1970s, the company felt a ketchup was needed to compliment it.  The result was VW Spiced Ketchup.

VW's sauce is no laughing matter! Since its launch in 1997, selling 20,000 bottles in its first year alone, sales have grown exponentially with 425,000 bottles sold in 2009.  As with all iconic food and drink brands, the receipe is a well guarded secret.
