Shell has been named Supplier of the Year for Sustainability by superstore chain Wal-Mart.

The Award was made at Wal-Mart's Supplier Summit, held in Orlando for Shell's Ecobox system for packaging motor oil.  Wal-Mart stated that the Ecobox helped reduce plastic and oil waste as well as speeding up lube changes at the retailer's Tire and Lube Express sites.

Wal-Mart estimated that without the Ecobox system, its 2,500 quick-lube sites would throw away millions of plastic bottles which would end up in landfill along with the residual oil left inside them.

The Ecobox houses the motor oil in a plastic liner which then sits in a cardboard box.  Shell claims the liner itself generates 89% less plastic landfill than the equivalent 24 quart plastic bottles, with the cardboard container also being fully recycleable.  Since its launch in 2009, the Ecobox has been used by more than 3,600 vehicle service centres across North America.
