Dexos lists published as GM takes on ILSAC
GM has published its list of official Dexos™-approved licenced brands, but there are some noteable absentees.
The list, for both Dexos™ 1 and 2 products, was released with names including ExxonMobil's Mobil 1 brand, Shell's Quaker State and Pennzoil, Smitty Supply, Motul, Petrol Ofisi and Wolf products.
The list also includes GM's own Dexos1 ACDelco product, with all of the listed oils at 5W-30 viscosity except Mobil 1's ESP 0W-40 for Dexos2.
However, according to OEM/Lube News, some lubes producers set to licence their products are still playing catch-up with testing and paperwork to get their brands on the list. Names such as CAM2 International, ALS, Warren Oil and Pinnacle have submitted, or are in the process of submitting, paperwork and test samples and are awaiting their licence notification.
Lubes News also reported challenging words from GM at a recent conference, in which GM Powertrain's Eric R Johnson claimed that, with a number of key tests about to expire, “several engine tests in GF-5 will cease to exist by 2014-2015.” According to the presentation, “[the] ILSAC/Oil [Committee] is incapable of developing a new classification by 2014.” His words drew a sharp response from the API.
Meanwhile, as reported elsewhere in the OATS Lubes Resource Centre, Chevron and CITGO have decided not to apply for Dexos licencing. CITGO recently announced that its Supergard and Mystic synthetic synthetic lubes brands will step up to GF-5 and API SM standards with availability from mid-November. It also stated that the performance of Supergard in all GM vehicles would be guaranteed by CITGO, even without Dexos registration.
