The plant will have a potential production capacity of 40,000 tonnes of Lithium, Lithium Calcium and Lithium Complex greases annually and is aimed mainly at meeting China's domestic demand.

The site is part of the massive Shell Zhuhai complex, which also includes the company's largest, by volume, lubes blending plant; opened in 2009 to supply southern China with mainstream lubricants. Construction of a Technical Service Centre is already underway at the same location.

The Lithium greases are used in the automotive and industrial bearing sectors and the new plant represents a continued drive by Shell to exploit the rapidly growing Chinese lubes and greases market, with the oil giant already holding the lion's share of the region's internationally-supplied lubes market.
