Honda predicts traffic jams

Honda has developed technology that can help to predict traffic jams through driving patterns.

With help from the University of Tokyo, Japanese automaker Honda is experimenting with technology that can help reduce the causes of traffic congestion.  The system monitors the driving pattern of a vehicle and determines whether the way the vehicle is moving could cause a jam.

According to Honda, early trials have shown an increase in average speed of around 23%, with improvements in fuel economy of around eight percent.  Further trials are expected later in the next few months in Italy and Indonesia with a view to commercialising the technology.

The system is more about smooth driving than avoiding existing congestion.  Dashboard displays advise the driver if they are driving in a way that could cause congestion - for example excessive braking or stop-start driving - and help to smooth the journey for their own vehicle and vehicles following behind.

The technology can also be linked to cloud-based computers and on-board adaptive cruise control which can help the driver and vehicle predict driving patterns ahead and help maintain the most appropriate distance.  Honda views the technology as a way of reducing emissions as well as the risk of accidents.
