Although a very different product from its regular output of motor oils for the Indian market, HP Lubricants believes a new innovation could be a lifesaver on roads in hilly or mountainous areas.

Teaming up with advertising and PR agency, Leo Burnett India, HP Lubricants has created SmartLife Poles for a safety and marketing campaign entitled #RoadsThatHonk.

The technology involves positioning two electromagnetic sensor poles at either end of sharp or hairpin bends. A vehicle approaching from one end triggers the sensor, causing the opposite pole to flash and sound a horn blast to warn approaching drivers at the other end of possible danger on the bend.

A trial is already underway over a 110 km stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, where police deal with around two-three vehicular incidents daily. Since the #RoadsThatHonk SmartLife poles have been installed, the local police department claims the number of incidents has reduced significantly.

Once the trial has been completed, HP Lubricants and its partners plan to roll-out the initiative India-wide.
