Merc releases new oil specs

Mercedes-Benz has released new engine oil specifications with more rigourous tests.

The new standards have been set in response to tougher EC emissions regulations and include new or more rigourous standards for fuel economy, biofuel compatibility and load carrying capacity, amongst others.

According to OEM/Lubes News, the standards will be more rigorous and include a new Daimler Oxidation Test, specifically aimed at improving biofuel compatibility.  The 168-hour bench test focuses on lubricant oxidation and viscosity when diluted with biofuels.

A similar length High Temperature Corrision Bench Test, modified from the current ASTM D6594, also concentrates on biofuel compatibility.    Other test include a new low temperature pumpability specification although the test is yet to be finalised and four news chassis dyno tests for fuel and emissions across a range of passenger engines.

The new specification package, designated V2012.1, is for testing lubes across the quality spectrum and for Mercedes' passenger and heavey duty truck range.
