Next generation of Dexos ahead of schedule

The next phase of the Dexos program will be launched in 2015.

General Motors (GM) claims it is ahead of schedule in its licensing of the next generation of global oil specifications.  The new Dexos spec would put the automaker two years ahead of the industry-wide GF-6 specification.

In a blog post, Willis states: "General Motors has been on a long journey with the GM dexos global oil specification process. Our journey is not complete – GM is ready to raise the performance level with its next generation of oil specifications. The next generation of dexos-approved oils will serve as enablers to increased fuel economy performance, while retaining the well-known oxidation and anti-wear performance."

Dexos 1 featured 11 engine, chemistry and physical tests, rising to 15 engine tests with the announcement of Dexos 2.

Dexos 3, with licensing due to start in 2015, is aimed at helping GM comply with US EPA's 2016 fleet limit of 35.5 miles per gallon and 2025 limit of 54.5 mpg; and with Europe’s 2015 CO2 limit of 130 grams per kilometre and 2022 limit of 95 gm/km.
