This one's a keeper!

A $42 million Christmas tree is one you're likely to hang on to long after the Festive Season.

Gold Christmas Tree

Taking two months to design, the solid-gold Christmas tree was created by Tanaka Kikinzoku, a Tokyo-based jeweller, and put together with the help of 10 goldsmiths.

Anyone wondering what better way for Walt Disney to sell its items to adults, they need look no further than this particular tree made with around 88 pounds of solid 24-carat gold.

The tree, designed to carry a great deal of sparkle beyond Christmas itself and looking more like a funfair merry-go-round, has a Disney theme with ornaments in the shape of Mickey Mouse and other famous cartoon characters.

This expensive keepsake, which is unlikely to go the way of conventional Christmas trees in January, is not actually worth its weight in gold.  The precious metal itself only accounts for half the tree’s value – the rest is essentially the price of the design.  However, with gold value continuing to rise, it would make a festive investment for the lucky owner.

Potential buyers were warned not to wait for a post-festive season sale, as the store said it was happy to sell the tree after Christmas and a discount is unlikely. Meanwhile, by early January there was no news of a prospective buyer.
