Shell tests new engine and diesel formulae

Shell has revealed it is researching two new products for the light and heavy vehicle markets.

shell-pecten-colour - Peter B - peterbOne of the two products is currently in concept stage as an ultra-low viscosity engine oil for the light vehicle market aimed a reducing fuel consumption but that provides both protection and acceptable drain intervals.  The oil, if it is produced, will have a 0W-10 rating with the aim of improving fuel efficiency by 6.5%.

Shell is being assisted with the research by UK-based Gordon Murray Design, Gordon Murray himself being responsible during his career for the design of Brabham and McLaren Formula One racing cars.

The second product is a nitrogen-enriched ultra low sulphur diesel fuel which will be available for trail in a few areas of the United States from the end of January.  The ULSD fuel is designed for the heavy vehicle market and uses the nitrogen to reduce carbon build-up on injectors and reduce fuel consumption - currently showing a 4.8% drop in testing.
