More than a quarter of a million cars were built in the UK in January and February 2015.

The figures indicate "a steady performance, which has been led by a strong domestic market," according to Mike Hawes, Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders' Chief Executive.

The number of cars produced for the domestic market have increased by 52% since 2011, with car makers investing heavily in UK production facilities. There has also been a big rise in the number of UK-produced components in British cars, according to SMMT figures.

With more than a £64bn turnover, the automotive industry is also a vital part of the UK economy, employing more than 160,000 people directly in manufacturing.
