PQIA survey finds misleading labelling in Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) survey.

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America's survey revealed that most consumers don't know the OEM recommended ATF for their vehicle(s).
As a result of this lack of knowledge, the survey revealed a number of concerns:
- Off-spec ATFs can damage transmissions
- Too many ATF specifications in the market leading to confusion and misapplication
- Consumer selection of the right ATFs for vehicles is hindered by descriptors like "Universal", "Multipurpose" and "Multivehicle"
- Unlicenced ATFs (i.e. D/M, DM) are causing significant quality issues
- New car dealers, transmission rebuilders and retail stores have fewer ATF quality issues than fast lubes and independent repair shops
Most people who were surveyed believe the industry can and should do more to help assure the quality and integrity of ATF in the market. Education of consumers and technicians was seen as a high priority.
The survey also recommended the creation of an ATF Quality Improvement Leadership Council.
